VERVE is for any and every child who is finding communication difficult.
It is about timing, having fun and shifting habits. We use video to catch your child being themselves with you, doing whatever they like to do, in the way that you and they normally do it. |
|
The video can be them at their best and/or them at their most challenging. It can be filmed when we are together or you can bring a video from home. Your child can carry on playing while we look back at the video and watch what they are currently doing to communicate and learn. At the same time we can talk through the things that are most important to you as a family.
The video freeze frame means we can spot subtle signals and skills in your child that are often hard to see in the speed of every day life. It also means that we can clearly see exactly what you do that is helping them, so that you can become increasingly confident about what works for them, what to focus on and how to help others in knowing what to do.

VERVE works over time because we are changing habits. By responding to clear behaviours we want to grow and in being predictable and consistent we provide a spring from which your child's confidence develops.
We take time for each child to settle, try things out, feel and notice what is working, and by seeing how their skills are stretching build on something new when they are ready.
By staying steady and taking one thing at a time each child becomes more and more confident and in control of their interaction and learning. They seek and build new skills tidily on the old.
Having done so with you, so they start to use those same skills with other family members, friends, adults and in new situations.

When we first start VERVEing we help each child to settle and feel new habits by having daily 5 minute quiet times :
During this time we:
- Notice what it is they want to investigate or play with.
- Join in by settling opposite them, down at their level and in the listening space (so that they can feel our interest).
- Listen and wait (while they do what they fancy doing)
- When they look at us, smile and say a word.
- When they look away, stop talking.
- If they look and say a word or phrase repeat What we know they are trying to say.
